    Up a Creek

    Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

Corbin is very into letter sounds lately, which is great because it gives me an opportunity to practice what I’m learning in my balanced literacy course. He has his ‘phonemes’ (individual letter sounds) down, and he is now starting to  sound out actual words phonetically. I couldn’t be more proud, especially since the very first word he sounded out was m-o-m. It almost makes up for the fact that he called me daddy for several months when he first learned to talk.

Thankfully, all of his ‘metalinguistic’ progress (thinking about his language) hasn’t stopped him from using certain words completely out of context, and consequently giving us all a good laugh. One of his more commonly misused words these days is ‘recognize.’ As in,  “Bennett! Stop recognizing me!” We think he means to say antagonizing, but since he’s not exactly open to correction, its hard to be sure.

Yesterday Corbin came up with my personal favorite when he told me, “I don’t always scratch my bum mom. Its only when my underwear gets stuck up in my creek.” Noting the look of confusion on my face, he turned around, pointed to his backside and announced, “This right here is my creek!”

We’ll put sharing that little quote on the list of things he’ll hold against me when he’s older.

    Cruel Joke

    Friday, July 2nd, 2010

Bennett has developed a bit of a mean streak lately, as evidenced by his latest knock-knock joke:

    Him: Knock-knock.

    Me: Who’s there?

    Him: Knock-knock?

    Me: Who’s there?

    Him: (suddenly screaming) STOP TALKIN!!!!

    Ahhh, Sweet Grace

I struggle with legalism. And sometimes I worry about the example that I’m setting for my children when I allow the law lover in me to speak.

Today as the boys and I were driving to my mother’s house, I failed to notice a red light and I had to slam on my brakes. This is the conversation that followed:

    Corbin: Mama, What happened!?

Me: I’m so sorry buddy! Mommy wasn’t paying careful attention and I almost went through a red light.

Corbin: Oh. Well that kind of hurt my neck.

Me: I’m so sorry that I did that baby.

Corbin: That’s OK Mama, accidents happen.

    Me: Thanks buddy.

Corbin: You know who taught me that Mama?

    Me: Who?

    Corbin: You!

I may do battle with legalism, but because of Christ in me, the hope of glory, I can REST in perfect grace.

    And We’re Off

    Monday, May 17th, 2010

Half way through my morning coffee Corbin laid this one on me:

“Mama, how do pteranodons pee and poop?”

No more PBS for that kid.

Corbin’s First Quote of the Morning

    Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

Corbin – (singing) The farmer in the dell, the farmer in the dell, Hi ho the……..wait…..what’s a dell?

    Mommy – Its a…well its like a place where….umm, I guess I don’t know buddy.

Corbin – Maybe daddy would know if he was here.  But he’s always lost in his work.

Of course that last statement would be gut wrenching if Chris was a workaholic.  But since he goes in an hour early just so he can be home by 4:30 to play with the boys, its just funny in a melodramatic kind of way.

    What’s in a Name?

    Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

Corbin had something exciting to tell me when I picked him up from school today. “Mommy, mommy,” he cried, as he ran across the playground and into my outstretched arms, “I wrote my own name by my very own self today!”

“That’s amazing buddy!” I replied as my heart swelled with pride.

    Pride and….heartache?

This part I’m not quite sure how to articulate. I’ve always been pretty sentimental, but since Bennett was born and life got double-dog crazy, I’ve sort of been going through a season of curbed enthusiasm.  I have to admit that I’ve been a bit  grateful for the reprieve from my ill timed gushes of nostalgia.  But today that sentimental, touchy feely, gushy side of me came flooding back full force as I stared down at this simple piece of paper.

My sweet little baby, my puppy dog jammied, goofy first born son can now write his own name.  He is growing and changing every single day, whether I have time to notice or I do not.  And somehow I am right back where I was two years ago as I watched him take his first steps – completely undone.

Who, What, Where, When, How and WHYYYY!!??

    Friday, November 6th, 2009

Corbin has always been an inquisitive kid, but recently he’s stepped up his game. He is asking the kinds of questions that make a parent feel like an ill-prepared, uneducated dummy.

Just a few examples from the last 24 hours are:

    • Why don’t jellyfish have eyes?
    • What will happen to all my toys if I die?
    • What makes alligators so mean?
    • How can God be in the sky and in my heart at the same time?
    • Why is that lady raking leaves off of the grass when more are just going to fall?
    • Why does Bennett scream when he gets tired?
    • Why don’t girl’s have manhoods? (Oh yeah, we’re there already!)

So far the only answers I have come up with are:

    • That’s just the way God made it.
    • Its nap time!
    • Do you want to watch a show?
    • I think I just heard Daddy at the front door.
    • Son, I have no earthly idea.

    Too Perfect!!

    Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

Corbin just made an unwitting reference to an ad campaign.  He is in the bathtub and he told his father that he wants to use the daddy soap (Irish Springs) instead of the boy soap.  Chris told him that the daddy soap was made for grown ups and Corbin replied, “And I like it too!”

This made me laugh out loud, but sadly  Chris had no idea why.  Please tell me someone out there remembers that old commercial with the sweater clad Irish couple!

    Three Year Old Theology

    Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

Corbin and I went on a little mommy/son date tonight.  On the drive home we saw a hot air balloon in the sky and this exchange took place:

Me- Corb look at that hot air balloon!

Corb-Yeah, cool!  But I can’t really see it because Jesus is making the sun too bright and it hurts my eyes.  He’s feeling grumpy so I think his father is gonna have to put him it time out.

    Hey, HAY, Hey!

    Saturday, July 25th, 2009

Corbin has an annoying endearing habit of saying, “Hey Mama?” before literally everything he says to me.  He has been known to use the phrase upwards of 20 times in a single conversation.  So just now, after hearing about 16, “Hey Mama’s” in a row, I used one of those terribly trite expressions that every young mother swears she will never use.

“Corbin, Hay is for horses!” I announced impatiently.

He thought about this for a moment and replied, “Oh OK,…….Hey Horse?”
